Bo & Mei

In my final year of film school I wrote and directed a film that deals with intimate issues about racial tolerance, gender identification and family dynamics. The story is about a young Chinese immigrant who stands up against the prejudices experiences externally and within their home.

Summary

Bo & Mei is about a second generation Chinese immigrant family living in the uk. The father, Long-Wei is an owner of a dry cleaners and experiences racial prejudice from a customer. Long-Wei however is not without his own prejudices, he finds it difficult to accept his son Bo who wants to wear female clothing. With the love and encouragement of his younger sister Mei, Bo finds the strength to stand up for the things that make him different by defending his culture to the bigoted customer. He shows his father that strength comes from within regardless of what we are perceived to be on the outside.

Bo & Mei was lucky enough to experience some success on the international festival circuit. Notably winning awards at the LGBT Toronto Film Festival and the New Renaissance Film Festival in Amsterdam. Bo & Mei was later acquired by GagaOOLala and MUBI.
